Le Puy en Velay retains an incredibly rich historic centre. Its Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation cathedral and splendid cloister were added to UNESCO’s world heritage list in 1998. 15 August each year is an opportunity to celebrate the Assumption with the procession of its Black Virgin. The Tourism Pass issued at the Tourist Office will allow you to visit the town of Le Puy en Velay’s greatest historical and cultural treasures.
Another unmissable sight is the statue of Notre-Dame de France that watches over Le Puy en Velay from the summit of Corneille rock. From up above, you will have an unbeatable view of the entire town of Le Puy en Velay. Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel, built on another volcanic peak over 80 metres high, can be reached by an imposing staircase with 268 steps.
In summer, the most beautiful sites in Le Puy en Velay and Brives Charensac are lit up with fabulous light shows. These extremely popular shows may also be available during the winter holidays. Several marked hikes can be followed, such as the three-day hike from La Chaise-Dieu in Le Puy en Velay through the medieval village of Allègre. Just a few kilometres to the west of Le Puy en Velay, the Allier Gorges await adventure seekers and novices alike for white-water rafting in unforgettable landscapes. Other white-water sports such as canoeing and canyoning are also offered in the warmer months from April to October.
The European capital of the Way of St James (Via Podiensis – GR65) and the beginning of the Stevenson route and other GR hiking routes, Le Puy en Velay attracts pilgrims and walkers of every level from all across Europe.
