Le Puy-en-Velay is the European capital of the Ways of Saint James. The town marks the starting point of the Via Podiensis, also known as the GR65. This historic route attracts pilgrims and walkers from across Europe every year, travelling towards Santiago de Compostela.

Le Puy-en-Velay, the starting point for Santiago de Compostela

Since the Middle Ages, Le Puy-en-Velay has been a major starting point for Santiago de Compostela. The Via Podiensis attracts French and European pilgrims, as well as walkers seeking nature, encounters and discovery.

Heritage and volcanic landscapes

The Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation Cathedral and its cloister, listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, bear witness to Le Puy’s rich heritage. From Corneille Rock, the statue of Notre-Dame de France overlooks the city.

Opposite, the Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe Chapel rises atop a volcanic peak more than 80 metres high. It can be reached by climbing 268 steps and offers a first glimpse of the Velay landscapes.
